Neutralizing Neutrals

Neutralizing Neutrals

It’s been a long held paradigm in real estate to stick to a neutral color palate when trying to sell a home. The thought is you don’t want to turn anyone off with colors they may not like. But really, who wants to buy boring? Using the hottest neutrals paired with the right colors in strategic places could make your house the refreshing standout from the other beige houses for sale in the neighborhood! The best way to use color, especially if you are staging or preparing your home for sale, is to pick a color that will complement the style of your home and your décor to pair with your otherwise neutral color palate. Use color in fabrics, upholstery, drapes, frames, lamps, furniture, and other accent pieces. So, what are the right colors? Here is a breakdown of interior design color trends for 2015:

Greek Blues - reminiscent of the blue of the Mediterranean Sea and the tops of the churches of Santorini. Try Pulsating Blue by Sherwin Williams. Pair with light gray or pale pink.

Olive – Give this shade a new life. Try Dill Pickle or Shamrock by Behr. Pairs well with darker neutrals like charcoal.

Red – Red is a wide range of possibility and should be used sparingly as to not overwhelm a room. Here are a few nice shades trending on Pinterest: Real Red by Sherwin Williams, Positive Red by Sherwin Williams, Hearts Content by Porter paints.

Aqua -The perfect marriage of blue and green. There are many shades of Aqua and it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. Check out Caribbean Breeze by Benjamin Moore, Festoon Aqua by Sherwin Williams or Aqua Chiffon by Olympic Paints. If you’re still stuck on what neutrals you should use, far and away the hottest neutral right now is gray. Try these hot shades of gray: Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams, Nantucket Gray by Benjamin Moore, or Skyline Steel by Behr.
