UPDATED: East Confederate Avenue Has Reopened

GRANT PARK — The stretch of East Confederate Avenue that was closed following a an incident that invloved a tractor trailer that slammed into railroad crossing overpass is expected to reopen later today, according to CSX Corp.

"CSX expects to have the road open to vehicular traffic later today," Carla Groleau, a spokeswoman for the Jacksonville-based railroad company, told East Atlanta Patch in a statement.

"The company apologizes for the inconvenience to neighbors, and thanks local law enforcement for their assistance."

The closure follows an incident Wednesday evening in which a tractor trailer clearly did not have enough headroom to clear the 12'-11" high bridge bridge near Edie Avenue.

The accident resulted in the trailer being wedged under the bridge with its trailer being sliced in half.

The driver was unharmed in the accident, WSB reported.

Groleau said an employee handrail was damaged and replaced Thursday afternoon.

There have been reports in the past of the same thing happening at this location. By all accounts, the bridge's height is clearly marked, something Groleau reiterated.

"There is signage in the area indicating vertical limits," she said..

It is not clear how tall the tractor trailer was.

A witness who said he was just three cars behind the truck, said the truck was "moving big time," and that there are a few noticeable cracks now on the bridge.  The witness supplied WSB with video footage taken minutes after the crash with his mobile device.
