Hogan started his career in fire services more than 35 years ago when he signed on to the Fulton County Fire Department. He retired from that agency to join the Johns Creek Fire Department in 2008. He rose through the ranks and was named the city's fire chief in February 2011.

Hogan has been designed a chief fire officer by the Commission on Professional Credentialing, and is a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers. As fire chief, Hogan worked to improve Johns Creek's fire rating. In 2015, the city improved its Insurance Office Rating to a 2, which led to residents saving more than $6 million in insurance premiums, the city added.

In his new role, Hogan will oversee the state's Fire Marshal's Office, building inspections, manufactured housing inspection, engineering, hazardous materials inspections, and licensing.

Hutmacher said he's coordinating search efforts over the next several weeks to permanently fill the position.
