Lawrenceville Councilman Tony Powell Resigns After 8 Years

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Lawrenceville City Councilman Tony Powell has officially resigned from his elected post with the City of Lawrenceville in order to fulfill his commitment to a limited term.

Powell turned in his resignation letter following the Jan. 7, council meeting where the City’s elected body voted unanimously to infuse the downtown with an expanded Arts facility; move forward with bold plans for a hotel and conference center project, and ear-marked $5 million to address aged and dilapidated housing challenges in the community.

“My promise to this community was to serve a full eight years and as of January 2019, I have honored that commitment and served the Citizens of Lawrenceville to the best of my ability,” said Powell.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I was afforded to help move Lawrenceville forward," he continued. "It has been a privilege to serve with some of the finest leaders in all of Gwinnett and Metro Atlanta and I would like to thank my fellow council members, the businesses and the residents of Lawrenceville for their faith in me these past several years.”

Powell’s political career has been marked by success, having worked diligently to maintain the City’s stable financial position, uphold transparency and the public process, and recruit and direct the City to new staff leadership that has supported the Council’s vision which will realize more than one-billion dollars of collective public and private investment for Lawrenceville in the next few years.

Powell said he will be taking the next several months to focus his attention on new ventures with his law firm, Powell & Edwards – Attorneys at Law, P.C. and serving as a member of the non-profit board, Impact 46.

Existing Council will discuss next steps in the process of filling this post at the upcoming work session on Jan. 16.
