UPDATE: Fire at Alexander Park Under Control; Man Arrested

A 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting off a model rocket that started a fire at Alexander Park in Lawrenceville.

UPDATE: Gwinnett County Fire officials reported that the fire was under control by 6:30 p.m. and crews remained behind to extinguish hotspots. In a press release it was reported that crews had arrived to find a large area involved with multiple areas of the park threatened. There were about five acres of dense bush on fire. Backup was requested with about 30 firefighters eventually battling the blaze. The fire was extinguished within a hour with no structures damaged and no injuries reported.

The fire was started by a Model Rocket that was shot off in the park. Gwinnett County Police Department arrested a 42-year-old man for the violation. The park remains open at this time.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services are working at large wood fire at Alexander Park off Old Snellville Highway in Lawrenceville. Multiple engines are on site. GCF&ES public information officer Eric Eberly said water tender has been requested and rehab is on hand for firefighters.

"Rehab is a unit that has air conditioning, drinks and cooling chairs to take care of the firefighters," Eberly said. "The Watertender is a truck with an 8000 gallon tank on it just to supply water. It does nothing else but deliver water where it is hard to get water."
