Illegal Burn Spreads to Neighbor's Property, Causes Extensive Damage

No charges were filed, but Walton County Sheriff's Office did compile a damage to property report.

Walton County Fire and Rescue responded to a grass fire at 1588 Holly Ridge Drive in the Cevera Lake subdivision in Walton County at about 3:16 p.m. on March 14, according to Batallion Chief Craig League.

"The fire started in the back yard of this residence and, due to high winds, quickly spread to a wooded area behind it, as well as to the adjacent property at 1590 Holly Ridge Drive," League said. "The fire damaged a wooden fence, a hot tub, 2 HVAC units, exterior siding, exterior power lines, landscaping trees and shrubs."

League said the cause of the fire was determined to be a homeowner attempting to burn off dormant sod.
