Is it OK for White College Students to Form Their Own Union?

Georgia State has a white student club formed and the college has received several complaints. Is that fair?

A student at Georgia State University has distributed fliers on the campus regarding a White Student Union that is being formed. According to an Associated Press story on Athens Online, the student who formed the club said theyΒ shouldΒ be able to celebrate their shared history and culture. However, Athens OnlineΒ reported that the college has received several complaints about the formation of theΒ club.

Shared issues that the student, Patrick Sharp, reportedly said affect white people include immigration and affirmative action. He said the club is open to any student and he will work with other clubs, such as the Black Student Alliance, on common issues.

The Atlanta Journal-ConstitutionΒ reports that whites comprise 38 percent of Georgia State's student body, followed by blacks at 35 percent, Asians at 12 percent and Latinos at 7 percent.

What do you think? Likely to just widenΒ the racial divide? Or fair play since there are already clubs on the campus representing other groups based on race?
