Loganville Lions Club Names New President

Loganville Councilman Rey Martinez was recently named the president of the Loganville Lions Club for the 2016-2017 term.

Loganville Councilman Rey Martinez was recently named the president of the Loganville Lions Club for the 2016-2017 term.

“I first joined this group a few years ago because of the great men that represent this club, including current and former county and city leaders,” Martinez said about his recent ascension to become the club’s leader. “But I also joined because of all the great work they do in the community and the charitable efforts they support.

“It is truly such a great honor and privilege to be chosen by the members of the Loganville Lions Club to lead this club for the upcoming year.” Martinez, who currently serves as the vice-mayor for Loganville, is serving his second term on the Loganville City Council and served more than two decades in the military, having retired from the Navy reserves. He also was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the board for the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity.

The Loganville Lions Club is one of the oldest clubs in the community, marking its 51st year. The Lions Club itself first formed in 1917 in Chicago and today boasts more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide. Each acts on the same goal of empowering volunteers to serve their communities and meet humanitarian needs.

The Loganville Lions Club helps raise funds through membership dues and fundraisers that benefit many local organizations that include Walton County Special Olympics and Shepherd’s Staff Ministries as well as on the statewide level through the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind. The group has also established a high school scholarship fund for Loganville and Walnut Grove high schools.

The Loganville Lions Club meets the first and third Monday of each month at Journey’s End restaurant, 4319 Highway 78, Loganville. Meetings start at 7 p.m. To learn more please join them at one of their meetings or email Martinez at reyforloganville@bellsouth.net.
