Special Needs Teen Hit, Killed By Van After Reported Missing

A 13-year-old boy from Loganville with special needs was hit and killed by a minivan on the Athens Highway after being reported missing.

LOGANVILLE, GA — A special-needs teen from Loganville was hit and killed by a minivan Monday night shortly after his mother reported him missing.

Jecolia Karikari-Prempe, 13, was hit while trying to cross Athens Highway, according to Gwinnett County Police. He died as a result of his injuries.

Just before the accident call at about 10:30 p.m., a woman on Sweet Ashley Way in unincorporated Loganville reported that her 13-year-old special needs son was missing. According to police, the boy had slipped out of his home while the mother was showering.

When she went to check on him, she found that his tablet was in the garage and the garage door was open. She began looking for him and then called police for help. Shortly after that the accident call came in.

The boy was hit less than a mile and a half from home. The driver is not facing charges.
