Gwinnett County is reminding residents to stay safe while enjoying swimming pools and trips to the lakes and beaches this summer. Most drownings occur with children 4-years-old and younger and typically at home swimming pools, the county said in a news release.

Here are some steps that you can take to keep your family safe this summer:

  • Assign a water watcher to supervise children swimming or playing in or near water, even if there are lifeguards present or if the children know how to swim.
  • Put your child in a properly fitted Coast Guard approved life jacket when in or around water.
  • If a child goes missing, always check the pool or spa first. This is especially important if your child is prone to wandering.
  • Make sure everyone in your household knows how to swim. The American Association of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons for children beginning as early as age one.
  • In addition, parents and caregivers should know CPR and how to get emergency help.
