Train Derails In Lilburn, Cleanup Continues

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Clean-up crews are picking up the pieces Monday after flooding spawned by Hurricane Delta caused a CSX train to derail in Lilburn.

Homes within a half-mile radius were evacuated after 38 cars — some of which caught fire — jumped the tracks between Main Street and Rockbridge Road after 1 a.m. Monday.

After a hazmat crew contained the fire and fumes, residents were allowed to return home at about 5:30 a.m., according to a statement from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

Authorities were alerted when a 911 caller told them the train had derailed and was taking on water. Two CSX employees were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The City of Lilburn has closed the Greenway Train between Main Street and Harmony Grove for the next three days while cleanup continues.
