Wrong Way Driver on 316 Causes Head-on, Charged with DUI

Several people were trapped in a vehicle and had to be extricated.

Three people have been hospitalized after a Friday night crash near the intersection of Highway 316 and Winder Highway. Police say the head on collision was caused by a wrong way driver. 

According to an emailed statement from Gwinnett County Police, the head on collision occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. The wrong way driver is believed to have been driving under the influence. Police say he will be charged with DUI. Several calls were placed to the 911 center reporting a wrong way driver in the minutes immediately preceding the crash, police added.

Several people were trapped and had to be extricated by Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services personnel. Three patients were transported to area hospitals. Two are described as being in critical condition.

The Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) is handling the investigation. This was the second accident caused by a wrong way driver in the metro Atlanta on Friday. According to the AJC, an accident on Ga. 400 at 3:30 a.m. Friday morning resulted in the death of the wrong way driver and sent radio personality Kelly Stevens of B98.5 to the hospital.
