Alabama Man Hit, Killed Pushing Broken-Down Car In Marietta

Elderly driver plows into two men who were helping push women's car off Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta.

MARIETTA, GA -- Police in Marietta are investigating a fatal crash that took the life of an Alabama man who was helping push his wife's stalled vehicle out of the way on Johnson Ferry Road at Hampton Farms Drive. Police expect charges against the elderly driver in the crash, which seriously injured another man who was assisting with getting the car out of the road.

Gwendolyn Matthews of Phenix City, Alabama was behind the wheel of a black 2006 Dodge Magnum when it become disabled Monday, police said. Two men, identified as Robert Matthews Jr., 45, also of Phenix City, and 49-year old Kevin Fullerton of Sandy Springs, were pushing the car from behind when a blue 2007 Mazda traveling north on Johnson Ferry struck them.

Robert Matthews was pronounced dead on the scene; his wife Gwendolyn Matthews, who was inside the Dodge, was not hurt in the collision; Fullerton was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Mazda, 85-year old Bruce Meacham of Marietta, was not injured in this crash.

Marietta police said that charges may be forthcoming in the incident and they are asking anyone who may have information about the crash to call (770) 499-3987.
