A Cobb County Eatery Failed Its Latest Health Inspection Report

COBB COUNTY, GA — Whether you're headed to Cobb County for the World Series or already call the county home, there are tons of dining options to check out. Take a look at the latest restaurant inspection scores from the past week.

A total of 77 Cobb County restaurants and food-service operations were inspected since Oct. 28 — the last time Patch posted a restaurant score roundup for Cobb County — in Acworth, Atlanta, Austell, East Cobb, Kennesaw, Mableton, Marietta and Smyrna.

Of the 77 restaurants, 54 received grades of A, 19 of them received grades of B and three received a C grade. One received a "U" for unacceptable: Church's Chicken in Austell.

According to the health inspection report, the following violations cost Church's Chicken the most points, either nine points or four points. The eatery also had several three-point and one -point violations:

• 9 points: Chicken breast reheated to 177ºF. Mac and cheese discarded.
  • Corrective action: TCS foods being hot held shall be 135ºF or above.
• 9 points: Operator stated raw chicken wash was prepared at 2 p.m. so wash placed on ice bath. Operator stated raw chicken breast and mixed pieces were taken out recently to batter and fry so placed inside of walk in cooler to cool.
  • Corrective action: CS foods being cold held shall be 41ºF or below.
• 4 points: Observed pink slime and mold on baffle inside of ice machine. Observed dishes stored as clean with grease debris. Observed black build up on white clear portion of drink nozzles at drink machine near drive thru
  • Corrective action: Food contact surfaces shall be clean to sight and touch.
• 4 points: Observed a can of jalapeños uncovered inside of Prep Top Cooler in Main Kitchen.
  • Corrective action: Unless cooling, food shall be stored covered.
• 4 points: Did not observe vomit and fecal clean up procedure or supplies.
  • Corrective action: A food establishment shall have procedures for employees to follow when responding to vomiting or diarrheal events that involve the discharge of vomitus or fecal matter onto surfaces in the food service establishment. The procedures shall address the specific actions employees must take to minimize the spread of contamination and the exposure of employees, consumers, food, and surfaces to vomitus or fecal matter. • 4 points: Observed hand sink water temperature at 87ºF. Not able to maintain hot water temperature.
  • Corrective action: A handwashing sink shall be equipped to provide tempered water at a temperature of at least 100ºF (38ºC) through a mixing valve or combination faucet.
• 4 points: Did not observe employee health policy in place. Was not able to verify food employees were informed of their responsibility to report to the person in charge information about their health and activities as they relate to diseases that are transmissible through food
  • Corrective action: Food employees and conditional employees are to be informed in a verifiable manner of their responsibility to report in accordance with the chapter, to the person in charge, information about their health and activities as they relate to diseases that are transmissible through food. Reviewed and discussed reportable food borne illnesses and their report symptoms.

Each item on an inspection form has a point value ranging from 1 to 9 points, with violations deducting points from the best possible score of 100. Higher points are taken for items with higher risk to cause illness, while repeat violations take even more points.

Letter grades assigned are A for totals of 100 to 90 points, B for 89 to 80, C for 79 to 70 and U for less than 70.
