Cobb Jail Inmate Dies In Hospital After Suicide Attempt

COBB COUNTY, GA — A Cobb County Jail inmate is dead after he attempted suicide Wednesday, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be looking into the incident.

Detention center staff noticed the male detainee, whose name has not been released, did not respond to a 6:30 a.m. routine check-in Wednesday morning. Deputies "immediately started CPR and called for an ambulance" once they discovered him, according to a Thursday press release from the Cobb County Sheriff's Office.

He was in the hospital in critical condition Thursday, until he was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

"The hospital's ethics committee agreed to a Do Not Resuscitate order given the nature of his medical condition. A GBI investigation is underway," a spokesperson for the Cobb County Sheriff's Office said.

CCSO has not released the inmate's name as officials are still trying to contact his family in his home country, which was also not given.

Sheriff Craig Owens requested the GBI conduct the investigation into the suicide, in line with Owens' pledge earlier this year that all jail death investigations will be turned over to the GBI.

The detainee faced multiple felony charges, the sheriff's office said, and was awaiting extradition to Colorado for alleged crimes of a sexual nature.
