Elderly Driver Dies In Bizarre Car Accident In Marietta Driveway

Cobb police believe Kwaku Appau, 66, of Marietta became disoriented, fell out of his car and was run over twice in his Marietta driveway.

MARIETTA, GA -- An elderly driver was killed in a bizarre accident Friday when he was thrown from his moving vehicle and run over twice, Cobb County police said. The accident happened in the 3300 block of Heatherwood Lane in Marietta about 4 p.m., authorities said.

According to a preliminary investigation, Cobb police believe the driver, identified as 66-year-old Kwaku Appau of Marietta was trying to park his blue 1992 Lincoln Town Car into his driveway, but somehow he put the vehicle in reverse. That's when, according to a news release by Cobb police spokeswoman Alicia Chilton, Appau, still traveling in reverse, became disoriented and pushed the accelerator instead of the brake. To make matters worse, Appau's driver-side door was open. His Lincoln Town Car, throttling down the driveway, collided with a down guy wire from a utility pole, Chilton said.

Then, investigators believe the Lincoln exited the driveway, making a hard right turn, causing the car to travel in a counter clockwise arc. "As the car was arcing, Mr. Appau was displaced and run over by it," Chilton said in the news release.

The Lincoln went over a concrete curb and into the yard, where it crashed into a tree. But the car still wasn't stabilized, police said.

"After colliding with the tree, the car rolled back down the grade in a northerly direction where it again ran over the victim," the Cobb police news release said.

Appau was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
