Field Of Flags Ceremony To Recognize 9/11 Anniversary In Cobb
The Kiwanis Club of Marietta is putting on its traditional Field of Flags remembrance starting this weekend, featuring a flag processional.
COBB COUNTY, GA — As the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks approaches, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta is putting on its Field of Flags remembrance ceremony starting this weekend.
The 9/11 Field of Flags is displayed every five years and has become one of the largest commemorative events in the nation, according to club officials. The commemorative event begins Saturday, and will be open to the public until Saturday, Sept. 18.
Led by the Atlanta Pipe Band, the March of Flags will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, and people can gather starting at 9 a.m. at Grace Community Church, 770 Kennesaw Avenue NW in Marietta.

The processional will head to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park right at 10 a.m., so event officials recommend getting there early.
Want to carry a flag in the March of Flags? You can sign up online here. It's free to participate or observe. The Kiwanis Club also welcomes flag sponsors, which can be purchased here to be flown in the Field of Flags for $30 per flag, or 4 for $100.

Parking, shuttle information
Parking and shuttle bus service to the church will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. from:
- C.W. Matthews, 1600 Kenview Drive off of Old 41 Highway.
- The Shrine Club lot, 1380 White Circle.
- The Gardens at Kennesaw Mountain, 1127 White Circle.
Return shuttle service will be provided until 12:30 p.m.
Future 9/11 event
On Sept. 11, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta will also have a memorial service at the Field of Flags at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive in Kennesaw, with:
- Detective Tommy Burns as bagpiper.
- Retired New York Fire Department Capt. James D'Avolio as speaker.
- Heather Graham Tamburello as soloist.
- The Marietta Fire Department color guard.
- A 21-gun salute by Cobb County Police Department honor guard.
- A riderless horseman presentation by the Cobb County Sheriff's Office.
- Reading of the names of the 2,977 victims in the 9/11 attacks.
- Retired Homeland Security Agent Richard Rubio playing taps.
Flags will be removed from the Field of Flags in the morning of Saturday, Sept. 18.
