Fresh Fruit at School, Food Trucks Near

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 15 in Marietta.

1. You couldn’t ask for a better August day than what awaits us today. It will be sunny with a comfortable high of 85 degrees and a breeze blowing 5 to 10 mph and gusting to 20 mph, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low will be about 64 with a continuing breeze.

2. Two Marietta elementary schools, and , are receiving grants this school year from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, the director of school nutrition, Cindy Culver, announced Friday. Lockheed is getting $40,628, and Park Street is getting $26,365 to provide fresh produce to low-income pupils as a daily snack. The amounts are based on school enrollment. “These FFVP grants provide our schools an opportunity to increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption while introducing students to a wide variety of produce that is not typically served during school lunch,” Culver said. “Each student receives an extra snack that helps them to stay focused and ready to learn.”

3. The recently honored one fifth-grader at each city elementary school who had shown leadership, teamwork and physical fitness. Those fifth-graders became city firefighters for a day, including a ride around Marietta Square on a firetruck. Check out the YouTube video posted by the city.

4. Meanwhile, schools are opening in surrounding Cobb County today, so be aware of the buses and other added traffic when you venture outside the city limits. As part of the excitement, Paper Mill Village in East Cobb is playing host to from 5 to 8 p.m. at the shopping center at Johnson Ferry and Paper Mill roads. Food trucks will be there, a lot closer than their normal hangouts in Midtown and Buckhead, and the shops will stay open late.

5. For a photographic education, head to the Cobb Photographic Society’s regular from 7 to 9 p.m. Tonight’s meeting, the last for four weeks because of Labor Day, will feature Gary Poole, a professional photographer since 1977 and the creator of online editing site yourbestcolor.com.
