COBB COUNTY, GA — A convicted child molester has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, according to a news release from the Cobb County District Attorney. Edwin Moran, 34, was convicted in September after a week-long trial and was sentenced Thursday.

The abuse came to light in May 2017 when the victim's mother woke in the middle of the night found Moran, partially nude, leaving the area of where her 13-year-old daughter was sleeping. The victim's mother was Moran's long-term significant other, and they lived together at the time.

Moran was the victim's father figure, the release says. She said she was asleep and did not know what, if anything, Moran had done.

A sexual assault examination of the child revealed an injury, the release says, and she experienced an outbreak of a sexually-transmitted disease days later.

The victim suffered repeated sexual abuse, the release says, but didn't say anything because Moran threatened her and she feared financial support for her family was in danger.

"Sexual abuse of children results in lifetime scarring and impact long after the abuse has ended," Senior ADA Courtney Veal said, according to the release.

"Those who prey on our most vulnerable are deserving of sentences such as the one imposed in this case, which ensures this offender will not have the opportunity to victimize again and hopefully allows the victim to begin healing," Veal said.

Moran, an El Salvador national, will serve 60 years, 59 of them in confinement. He has been locked up since May 2017, and will get credit for that time served.
