Here are the top three stories today in Marietta:

  1. Marietta the Gathering, a celebration of the Geek Community, pop culture, and the arts, will be held in Glover Park at the Historic Marietta Square on Mar. 4, 2023. This new festival will offer a wide range of activities, including the Guild Show, showcasing art makers, merchandisers, crafters, and smiths; Tourney Alley, featuring board games, card tournaments, and possibly video game arcade; and numerous panels, performances, and contests within and around Glover Park. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Historic Marietta Square. (Marietta Georgia)
  2. A sailor from Marietta, John M. Donald, was killed in the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Born in Ball Ground, he was serving aboard the USS Oklahoma as a Shipfitter 3rd Class. After the attack, his remains were recovered but could not be identified. However, modern forensic techniques led to his identification and he will now be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. Donald received several decorations for his service including the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal. (Marietta Patch)
  3. Cobb County Deputy Recruit Jacqun Brown has been dismissed from his duties and charged with battery and violation of oath of office following a violent altercation with a detainee at the county jail. The altercation, which resulted in a beating, took place on Feb. 4 and was a clear violation of the deputy's training, according to Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens. Owens stated that the agency will not tolerate abuse of power and will enforce laws fairly and equally. (KESQ)
