Marietta's Big Chicken Turns 60, Its Architect Turns 90

The Big Chicken once served as an advertising tool for Johnny Reb's Chick, Chuck and Shake before becoming a KFC staple in Marietta.

MARIETTA, GA — Sunday served as a birthday celebration both for KFC's Big Chicken and its architect, Hubert Puckett.

While Puckett turned 90-years-old, the Big Chicken entered its 60th year of clucking at the Cobb Parkway restaurant.

Marietta city officials shared the news in a Facebook post Monday, adding Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin attended the event.

"We are grateful to have such an amazing landmark in our city," the city said in the post.

Built in 1963, the Big Chicken was initially an advertising tool for Johnny Reb's Chick, Chuck and Shake, according to Explore Georgia. It stands at 56 feet tall.

After business owner S.R. "Tubby" Davis sold Johnny Reb's, the building became a KFC franchise and is now used as a landmark to direct drivers, according to Explore Georgia.

Puckett, the Big Chicken designer, is a Georgia Institute of Technology graduate, according to both Marietta city officials and Explore Georgia.
