Here are the top three stories today in Marietta:

  1. On December 3, 2021, Paloma Baba and Veronica Silva were tragically involved in a fatal car accident when their SUV was struck by a speeding Ford F-150 driven by Ivan Garcia, who was being pursued by Marietta Police Officer Wesley Scott. The incident resulted in Silva's death and left Baba with multiple broken bones, devastating their families. It was later revealed that Garcia fled because he didn't have a driver's license and feared the impact on his immigration status, while Officer Scott continued the pursuit despite not having reasonable suspicion of a violent crime, as required by department policy. Investigations have uncovered evidence, including video footage, suggesting that Scott may have misled in his report about the pursuit, leading to further scrutiny of his actions. 2. A well-known dentist's office in Marietta has been renamed and is under new ownership. The practice of David Kurtzman, DDS on Camphill Hill Street has been acquired by Dr. Nicole Barnett, and will now be known as Autumn Dental. Dr. Barnett worked with Dr. Kurtzman for almost three years, which should ease the transition for patients. Autumn Dental will provide general dentistry services, restorative dentistry, and cosmetic services, and the office is equipped to treat patients with special needs or dental-related anxiety. (Yahoo! 3. The City of Marietta's Public Works Department is celebrating after recently receiving full accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). The APWA found that the Public Works Department is in full compliance with the APWA's recommended management practices. APWA accreditation is a four-year process with five major steps, which include conducting a self-assessment, submitting an application, making improvements, and undergoing an on-site evaluation before receiving accreditation.
