Here are the top three stories in Marietta today:
- At least five vehicles were involved in the fatal car accident that caused delays on 1-75 at Delk Road at about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Marietta Police Department. Police reported that a young woman drove off to the left shoulder with a flat tire and was struck while attempting to change it. She and another person perished in a chain reaction. The victims' names have not yet been made public. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- On Jun. 7, a hearing will be held to decide whether to accept a rezoning that will turn the Motel 6 on Delk Road in Marietta into apartments. 5th Street Capital Partners submitted their request for the conversion the day before the City Council decided to impose a six-month moratorium on the construction of new apartments. The attorneys for the developer claim that the placement of the apartments would stop criminal activity — which is what the motel is renowned for — and that renovating the property would be less expensive than new construction. - A Jun. 22 hearing has been set in the federal lawsuit opposing the Cobb County Board of Education’s new redistricting map. The hearing stems from a motion submitted by an attorney from Freeman Mathis & Gary, the law firm Cobb County School District hired to represent in the lawsuit. A group of civil rights organizations and numerous Cobb parents filed a complaint in the Northern District of Georgia last June, alleging racial discrimination and that the map disenfranchised voters of color. The school district requested to join the case in December so that it could defend itself against the claims made in the lawsuit. (Yahoo.com)
