The woman, who police have not identified, called 911 about 2:20 a.m. to report the intruder, Marietta police told Patch. The homeowner told authorities she shot the man to defend herself and her family. She was not injured in the incident. The children are safe and with other family members, police said.
Responding officers found a man dead inside the home, Marietta police spokesman Officer Chuck McPhilamy told Patch. The deceased man's identity has been determined but authorities have chosen not to release it pending notification of his family.
"This is a quiet area. One way in, one way out. There's a golf course on one side, it's a beautiful area," McPhilamy told WAGA. Police officers are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the home, he said.
