Active Duty Soldier Killed Near Midtown Homeless Shelter

The Nigerian immigrant's family says he was killed while trying to give shoes away to the homeless.

A Nigerian immigrant and U.S. Army soldier was shot and killed near a homeless center in Midtown over the weekend, police say.

Sgt. Atting Eminue, 24, was walking with a friend to his car near the Peachtree-Pine shelter early Sunday morning when he was shot following an altercation. Eminue’s family tells WSB-TV that he was giving shoes away to the homeless when he was killed.

An Atlanta police report says that Eminue was shot multiple times, while the woman he was with was shot once in the leg and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she is expected to survive.

Eminue served three tours of duty in Afghanistan and was a father, his family said.
