Atlantans Protest to Expose Hardee’s Broken Promises

Protesters Call on Hardee's to Honor Its Decade-Old Pledge to End the Use of Inhumane Battery Cages

This past Sunday, The Humane League—one of the leading animal welfare charities in the U.S. —joined Atlanta consumers at Hardee’s, 6671 Roswell Rd, to protest the restaurant and its parent company CKE, for failing to honor a promise it made over 10 year’s ago to eliminate cruel battery cages from its egg supply chain.

What’s Wrong with Cages?

  • Cruelty: Hardee’s continues to source eggs from hens so tightly confined in wire cages that they cannot spread their wings, nest, or engage in natural behaviors, causing immense pain and suffering.
  • Public Health Concern: Extreme confinement leads to stressed animals, which increases the risk of harmful bacteria and viruses and threatens public health.

According to USDA statistics, the percentage of cage-free egg-laying hens in the U.S. has risen to a historic high of 40.2%, a significant increase from 10.5% in 2014. Companies are responding to this consumer demand. McDonald's, Kraft, Barilla Group, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Starbucks Coffee, and Omni Hotels & Resorts are now sourcing 100% cage-free eggs, and over 500 U.S. businesses have made public commitments to eliminate caged eggs from their supply chains. Additionally, eleven states have banned battery cages for egg-laying hens.

It’s time for Hardee’s to keep its promise and report on its cage-free progress! Learn more at HeartlessHardees.com. For more information about the Humane League, please visit TheHumaneLeague.org.
