Coro Vocati Performs Concert Honoring Robert Shaw on March 11 & 12

Chamber choir pays homage to legendary music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Atlanta-based professional chamber choir Coro Vocati is excited to announce its spring 2023 concert, Dear People, which honors the legacy of Robert Shaw, who forever changed the music landscape of Atlanta during his tenure as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and founder of the ASO Chorus. With performances on March 11 and 12, Coro Vocati will be performing songs that reflect Shaw's contributions as a conductor of masterworks, as a champion of social justice, and as a composer/arranger of America's folksongs and spirituals.

“Every singer and conductor in Coro Vocati has been influenced by the music, philosophy, pedagogy, and presence of Robert Shaw,” said Coro Vocati Artistic Director John Dickson. “He is considered a giant in the choral music world, and the rehearsal techniques he developed continue to shape new generations of singers today. Shaw’s lasting impact on Atlanta’s artistic heritage and American choral music is undeniable.”

Complementing Coro Vocati's Dear World concert from this past October, the group’s March concert is titled Dear People, which is the greeting Shaw used in his regular letters to the ASO Chorus. The program, which is divided into three phases of an artist's creative process -- The Maker, The Making and The Made -- attempts to capture Shaw's vision of arts and humanity, and conveys the power of the arts to affect change.

The concert features a wide variety of genres and themes, with the choir performing everything from excerpts of Brahms’ Requiem and Haydn’s The Creation to Robert Shaw’s arrangements of Wondrous Love and What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor, which he created in collaboration with Alice Parker. Coro Vocati singers who had a close connection with Shaw will also share their recollections about working with him.

Coro Vocati will perform Dear People on Saturday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at Morningside Presbyterian Church as well as on Sunday, March 12 at 3 p.m. at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit this link.
