Monroe Mayor, 3 Council Seats Up For Election in November

Qualifying for the 2013 Municipal Elections in Monroe begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, and conclude at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30.

The 2013 municipal election for the City of Monroe, Ga. will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013. The four seats up in November include the mayor and the three council posts of District 3, District 6 and District 8. The mayor's seat is currently held by Greg Thompson, District 3 is held by Nathan Purvis, District 6 by Wayne Adock and District 8 by Jimmy Richardson.

Qualifying for the 2013 Municipal Election will begin on Monday, August 26, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. and conclude on Friday, August 30, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in the office of the Walton County Board of Elections, 303 South Hammond Drive Suite 111. The Qualifying package may be obtained at Walton County Board of Elections, 303 South Hammond Drive Suite 111, Monroe, Georgia 30655.

Anyone wishing to run for a seat on the Monroe City Council must meet the following five requirements.

  1. Must be a one (1) year City of Monroe resident at least one year preceding the election in which he offers as a candidate.
  2. Must be a registered voter of the City of Monroe.
  3. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  4. Must state which seat/person for which you are qualifying.
  5. Must pay a qualifying fee of $180 for a council seat or, if running for the Mayoral seat, $218.

According to the City of Monroe website, compensation for elected officials is as follows: 

  • Mayor $600 per month  
  • City Council members receive $500 per month. 
Elected officials are expected at the meetings as well as during annual Strategic Planning Sessions, some required conferences and seminars, and budget review sessions. Elected officials are also expected to participate in county or community involvement programs, leadership programs, and encouraged to attend various city functions and events.
