Apartment Suicide Leads to Big Drug Bust

A North Druid Hills man was charged with drug trafficking last month after police responded to a suicide in his apartment and found 22 pounds of marijuana.

A North Druid Hills man was arrested and charged with drug trafficking after police found 22 pounds of marijuana at the scene of a suicide in his apartment early last month, DeKalb County police said.

Marquis Davis, 24, was arrested after police responded to a report of a person shot at the Gables Sheridan apartment complex, 1514 Sheridan Rd., at about 6:50pm Feb. 3, the police report said.

When police arrived, they found the body of a 20-year-old woman on the floor near her bed with a gunshot wound to her head. A 9mm handgun sat at her feet. She was dead, the report said.

A responding officer noticed marijuana and drug paraphanalia on a counter as he swept the apartment. He also saw bloody footprints leading outside to the balcony door and the patio closet. A large FedEx box with bundles of marijuana inside – about 22 pounds of it – was stashed inside the closet.

Davis told police he and the woman had been "having troubles" and that she had been depressed lately, the report said. The two were arguing shortly before 6:40pm that night, and the woman asked Davis to get her bag from her vehicle, Davis told police. When he returned, he said he found the woman laying on the floor, dead, and he called 911.

A witness sitting on a nearby patio told police he heard a single gunshot come from Davis' apartment and screaming shortly after. He said he watched a male suspect step onto the patio and place a "large object" in the closet before he returned inside and began screaming again, the report said.

About $500 in cash was also found at the scene. Davis was taken to the police department's Major Felony Unit for additional questioning, and the woman's body was released to Levitz Funeral Home.
