Man: Homeless Man Assaulted Me, So I Made Him Soup

A North Druid Hills man said a homeless assailant he invited into his home fled with his wallet and his checkbook. But a police officer said they remained at the apartment.

Did a homeless man really assault a North Druid Hills man who invited him into his apartment and made him soup on March 30?

You tell me.

DeKalb County police responded to the complex in North Druid Hills, 1105 North Jamestown Rd., that night on a robbery call. They met with the 53-year-old victim, a tenant of the complex, who appeared drunk when an officer arrived, the police report said.

The victim's eyes were bloodshot and glossy, and blood from his nose was dried on his face. His speech was slurred and drawn out, and he repeated himself, the report said. As he spoke with an officer, an empty beer can sat next to him.

The victim told police he was walking home from the Toco Hills Promenade shopping center on North Druid Hills Road when he was approached by a homeless man asking for money for food at about 8pm. The victim told the homeless man he could come home with him, and he would make him food.

When they arrived at the victim's apartment, he told police the homeless man assaulted him right after he opened the door.

But, still, he said he made the homeless man food. He told police he made the suspect soup and crackers, and the suspect ate it standing up. Then they fought again. The officer said he saw unopened crackers on the table but no soup, bowl or splatter from fighting. He also said he didn't see anything on the victim's stove.

The victim told police the homeless man grabbed his wallet and checkbook and left the apartment.

But the police officer saw the victim's wallet laying on his bed, and the checkbook sat on a desk across the room from the table. The victim said there was $20 missing from his wallet but later said it was $50. Dried blood was also on his bedroom floor.

When asked if he knew the homeless man, the victim said he had seen him in the area before, but then he changed his mind and said he had not.

The victim refused medical treatment.
