Wesleyan's Winter Guard Takes 1st Place in HS Competition

Peachtree Corners: In their last performance of the season, Wesleyan’s Advanced Winter Guard ensemble placed first at the March 2 Pope High School competition. Against more than 15 teams from much larger schools - including Johns Creek HS, North Hall HS, Sprayberry HS, and Mill Creek HS - our ensemble won by an unusually large margin of 5 points! Using a sports analogy, this would be the equivalent of winning Region – by a blowout!

Unlike color guard teams, which perform outdoors on a football field or parade route and are accompanied by a marching band, winter guard performs indoors to recorded music. Winter guard performances integrate dance (contemporary, lyrical, jazz, and ballet) with equipment work. In competitions, teams are judged in the areas of talent, precision, creativity, and horizontal orchestration (how all the elements create the larger picture/effect). It sounds complicated, but our ensemble makes their finished product look effortless!

Advanced winter guard ensemble members are:
Seniors: Purabi Das, Sterling Feininger
Juniors: Fernanda Solis, McKenzie Stewart, June Zhu
Sophomores: Erin Boyd, Susanna Healy, Jassy Singh
Freshman: Alissa Zhu
Eighth Graders: Allie Bell, Linsey Cartmill, Rachel Parrish, Jessie Roberts

Jeff Foster, Director of Bands, says, “I am so proud of the girls - what a way to finish! Special thanks go to Wesleyan team advisors Julie Gordon [Director of Color Guards] for her expert instruction, design and leadership, and to Katie Dixon [Faculty Color Guard Sponsor] for all she has done for the squad this season.”
