Peachtree Corners Mom Charged With Murder In Son's Stabbing Death

Firefighters responding to a Springs Lane apartment fire found the 6-year-old boy inside of the apartment with stab wounds.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA — A 23-year-old has been charged on suspicion of murder in connection with the stabbing death of her 6-year-old son at Springs Lane, Gwinnett County Police said Tuesday.

Police said A’zaria Shante Burton, 23, was charged on suspicion of malice murder, felony murder, first-degree arson and other charges. She was booked Friday into the Gwinnett County Jail and is being held without bond, police said.

The initial call from an upper level resident was dispatched around 8 a.m. to first responders as an apartment fire.

Police said when firefighters entered the affected apartment, they found the unresponsive boy, who was believed to be about 6-years-old.

"When members of the fire department arrived, they could hear an audible fire alarm coming from the unit on the first level. After making entry into the first-level unit, they discovered an unresponsive boy who appeared to have multiple stab wounds," police said in a news release.

The boy, who was the only person in the apartment at the time, was taken to a local hospital, where he died, police said. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

Police found a woman with wet clothes behind the apartment building and took her into custody.

The boy was not identified, and a motive is unknown.
