The Universal House of Justice is the international governing council of the Baha’i Faith. Its creation was ordained by Baha’u’llah, the Baha’i Faith's founder.

In the intricate tapestry of the administrative bodies of the world’s religions, the Universal House of Justice stands as a beacon of unique significance and optimism. Ordained by Baha’u’llah, the founder of the Baha’i Faith, it’s unparalleled in the realm of religious institutions because it’s the only democratically elected global leadership body in any faith. The Universal House of Justice operates at the apex of a four-tiered administrative structure that includes National, Regional and Local Spiritual Assemblies.

What… No Clergy?

Distinct from traditional religious hierarchies, the Baha'i Faith has no clergy, ministry or priestly figures. Instead, it embraces an international governing council originally ordained by Baha’u’llah, introducing the concept of The House of Justice, an organization endowed with both political and religious aspects. This innovative institution, protected by the Preserving Power of Baha’u’llah, aims to maintain the integrity and flexibility of the religion, guide its followers, and exert a positive influence on society.

The Universal House of Justice is empowered to legislate on matters not explicitly covered in the Faith’s Sacred Texts, ensuring the adaptability of Baha'i teachings to an ever-evolving world. Its role extends to promoting education, peace, global prosperity, and safeguarding human honor and the position of religion.

What… No Personal Power?

One remarkable aspect is the absence of campaigns and personal power in the election process. The Baha'i community elects its Spiritual Assemblies, including the Universal House of Justice, through a process devoid of nominations, candidacies or politicking. Instead, Baha'is participate in a prayerful and reflective voting process aimed at identifying those with spiritual qualities who are dedicated to the service of humanity.

The Constitution of the Universal House of Justice, drafted in 1963, delineates its powers and duties. These include preserving Sacred Texts, advancing the interests of the Faith, enacting laws not expressly recorded in the Sacred Texts, and adjudicating disputes within its purview. Notably, the Universal House of Justice has no political prerogatives beyond safeguarding personal rights, freedom and initiatives.

Unity in the Community

Baha’is work to foster unity and eliminate prejudice in all its forms. One way this shows up is when the Viller family periodically hosts interfaith devotional gatherings that focus on a virtue.

“The core beliefs of all the world’s religions transcend any one faith,” said Al Viller, Peachtree Corners resident and member of the of the Local Spiritual Assembly of Peachtree Corners. “It’s remarkable when you see how similar the intent is behind the words from different faiths associated with a specific virtue.”

Consequently, the interfaith gatherings don’t have the motive to convert others. Instead, they create a safe social space where no one’s religion is more important than that of another and all are treated with equal respect. There are nonsecular quotes included as well.

Parting Thought

In essence, the Universal House of Justice epitomizes a selfless commitment to humanity's welfare, guided by the principles of justice, unity, and service. As it navigates the complexities of our evolving global civilization, this unique institution strives to fulfill Baha’u’llah’s vision for a spiritually and materially prosperous world.
