Unity Atlanta Church Celebrates 100 Years of Ministry

Unity Atlanta Church, in Peachtree Corners, proudly announces our 100th Anniversary. The Centennial Celebration Service on Sept. 22, 11 am, is the culmination of the yearlong observance of this historic milestone. This special event features a ribbon-cutting and “Bridge of Faith Ceremony,” honoring where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. Special music will be provided by Unity Atlanta Church’s Soulful Harmonics Band and Celebration Choir.

Unity Atlanta Church extends a warm welcome to the community to this special 100th Anniversary event as well as all regular Sunday Services. Youth Sunday School is held 11 am-12 pm for ages 5 through 18. Childcare is available 10 am-12:30 pm for children ages 4 and under.

A Legacy of Diversity and Inclusiveness

As the name suggests, Unity Atlanta Church embraces the belief in the equality of all people. From its inception in 1924, the church has celebrated diverse leadership and proudly employed both male and female ministers. The church made history in the 1950s with Rev. Mabel Butts serving as a female African American minister. For the past seven years, Senior Minister, Rev. Jennifer L. Sacks (Rev. Jenn) has led the community.

Unity Atlanta Church is also renowned for its inclusive and welcoming environment. It has always fostered a spirit of acceptance in regard to beliefs, age, ethnicity, orientation, identity or any other
distinguishing factor. As Rev. Jenn says, “No matter who you are, who you love, or how you identify, you belong here.”

Unity’s Teachings and Roots

“The goal of Unity Atlanta Church is to provide a church experience of a loving God,” Rev. Jenn explains. The church teaches the effective daily application of the principles taught and exemplified by Jesus. It promotes a way of life that leads to health, prosperity, happiness, and peace of mind. While rooted in Christianity, the church honors all paths to God, promoting a positive message of practical spirituality.

Unity is a religious movement within the wider New Thought movement, founded in 1889 by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore. It is best known to many through its Daily Word® devotional magazine, published since 1924. The extensive worldwide distribution continues to inspire and guide individuals in their daily spiritual practice.

From its humble beginnings in 1924 as one of the first Unity study groups, Unity Atlanta Church has grown into a flagship congregation of the greater Unity Worldwide movement, headquartered in Unity Village in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Greatest Challenges Became Greatest Successes

Unity Atlanta Church has faced numerous challenges over its 100-year journey. The cornerstone of its longevity has been its commitment to its mission - being a guiding light for people to grasp and grow in their understanding of their divine inheritance while living a human experience. The congregation as a whole and its many congregants have thrived through deep personal self-reflection and support of one another to apply Unity principles.

As with many churches, Unity Atlanta Church was greatly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thanks to the quick learning and implementation of live-streaming technology, the church developed a successful on-line platform to reach its remote congregation. Not only has the in-person congregation returned and continues to grow, Unity Atlanta Church now enjoys a significant global virtual audience.

Committed to Serving the Community

Community service is a cornerstone of Unity Atlanta Church's mission. The church actively supports local initiatives, including its neighborhood elementary school, community senior centers, food banks, animal shelters, and more by collecting and donating needed food and
supplies.

Unity Atlanta Church has also become a leader in supporting other church organizations, regardless of creed. Since Covid-19, the church has opened its doors to share its facilities with four other churches needing a physical home. The mutually beneficial relationship is similar to co-working arrangements, with cost savings and convenience for everyone. While each church operates independently with different times and spaces, they all share a mindset of cooperation and unity of core purpose, to serve their community’s spiritual needs.

As Unity Atlanta Church enters its new century with hope and excitement, it continues its commitment to fostering spiritual enlightenment and unity among all people. Under the leadership of Rev. Jenn, the church is devoted to helping people connect with God, themselves, and one another so they transform their lives, their communities, and the world.
