Veterans, Supporters Attend Veterans Monument Groundbreaking

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA – The mayor, several council members, city leaders and supporters braved the chilly weather for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Peachtree Corners Veterans Monument on Tuesday, Jan. 15, which will be located at the city’s new Town Center.

Nearly 25 attended the event to celebrate the beginning of the construction of the 3,000 square-foot-monument. The veterans’ monument will feature five sculptures to represent each of the Armed Forces.

Additionally, one sculpture will be placed to honor the veterans of the National Guard, Federal Reserves and Merchant Marines. A central pillar topped with a sculpture of an eagle atop the globe will represent the presence of the U.S. Armed Forces around the world.

The groundbreaking event, originally planned for Nov. 15, 2018, was postponed due to heavy rainfall.

“We were delighted to finally be able to celebrate the groundbreaking of the city’s veterans’
monument,” said Bob Ballagh, Executive Director of the Peachtree Corners Veterans Monument
Association. “This was a long-awaited event and we look forward to the grand opening in May when the monument is complete.”

Doug Heckman, VP of the Peachtree Corner Veterans Monument Association, was the master of
ceremony for the event. Rev. Leland Armbright, senior pastor at Christ the King Church, offered the invocation followed by remarks by Mayor Mike Mason. Ballagh then invited members of the Board and members of the City Council and staff to use the military entrenching tool provided at the site to move the dirt. After the informal ceremony, attendees visited the construction site to view the installed seats and wall caps.

“As a Naval veteran, it gives me great pleasure that the city has set aside a special place to recognize the men and women who served or are serving our country,” said Mayor Mike Mason. “We as a nation owe them a debt of gratitude for their service.”

The Peachtree Corners Veterans Monument Association is a non-profit organization that is raising money to build the monument on the City’s town green. More information about the monument, including how to buy a brick to be placed on the monument on the PCVMA website.
