Woman Killed While Crossing Pleasant Hill Road
Gwinnett Police said it was the fourth pedestrian fatality in the county in less than a month.

Gwinnett Police are urging residents to pay closer attention to crosswalk procedures after a Lawrenceville woman was struck and killed while crossing Pleasant Hill Road Monday evening -- the fourth pedestrian fatality in less than a month in the county.
Police said Sarah Grindinger, 76, died at the scene after being struck by at least two vehicles around 6 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Pleasant Hill and Corley Place.
According to the preliminary investigation findings, police said Grindinger tried to cross Pleasant Hill Road from Corley Elementary against the ”don’t walk” signal before being struck.

“Accident investigators confirmed and documented that the cross walk signals were functioning properly at the intersection,” Gwinnett Police Public Information Officer Cpl. Deon Washington said in a news release. “Both drivers involved in the accident stopped at the scene and were interviewed by investigators. Speed and alcohol are not contributing factors in this investigation.”
Police said at least two of the previous fatal accidents involved a pedestrian crossing the road contrary to traffic laws.

The three previous pedestrian fatalities also involved hit-and-run drivers -- all three drivers have been arrested.

Police said two of the three vehicles stopped at the scene. The third, a maroon Honda, fled without stopping to render aid or call 911. Jhonatan Romero-Alvarez (first name spelling via police and jail records) was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.
- On Oct. 22, Sambi Velasquez was struck and killed while crossing the road in the 6000 block of South Norcross Tucker. Manuel Realejeno, who ran from the scene, was arrested and also charged with vehicular homicide. Police said Velasquez did not cross at the crosswalk.

“The Gwinnett County Police Department is urging pedestrians to abide by the traffic laws that govern pedestrians crossing roadways. It is paramount for the safety of vehicles on the roadways and pedestrian travel,” police said.
