Here are the top stories today in Roswell:
- The Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, which includes the Vickery Creek Unit and the Allenbrook Unit in Roswell, is beseeching dog owners to clean up after their pets. Recurrent rain and storms have caused higher amounts of bacteria in the Chattahoochee River; not picking up after dogs adds to these levels. “Dog waste is the second highest contributor to E. Coli [in the river],” Chattahoochee National Recreation Area Superintendent Ann Honious said. To encourage dog owners to "bag it and bin it," the park system has installed 37 dog waste stations throughout the recreation sites and trails. (WSB Radio)
- The budget for the fiscal year 2024 was formally approved by the City Council at the recent meeting on June 12. The adoption of the budget was initially scheduled for May 25; however, some members of the council asked for an extended deadline to allow for more talks about finances. Mike Palermo was the only councilmember who was not in favor of the $194.3 million budget. However, he stated that the "proposal is a 'step in the right direction.'" A majority of the budget will be funded by property and sales taxes. (Appen Media)
- The Canton Street closure proposal is in a current "state of limbo" as the City Council committee has decided to delay the development of a task force for the project. The Public Safety and Public Works Committee met on June 13 and discussed the specific conditions, framework, and criteria for the Canton Street Promenade Task Force. However, the committee felt that they needed more time before officially creating the task force. They will select seven individuals for the task force. A member of the City Council said the framework will be finalized at the next meeting which is scheduled for June 21. The member-appointment of the task force will occur at a later date.
