Here are the top stories in Roswell today:
- Penny Hart, a wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, has a chance to return to his home state to play for the Atlanta Falcons. Hart is not only a native to Georgia, but he was also raised right here in Roswell. The former King's Ridge Christian School and Georgia State footballer is currently vying for a chance to be added to the Falcons' roster. He recently had his first OTA practices the Falcons. "So, just knowing that I'd have the opportunity to be a part of this culture, it meant everything to me. I couldn't resist that," Hart said. The Roswell native is looking forward to showing the organization how he will be an asset to the Atlanta team. (Atlanta Falcons)
- The CVS store on Holcomb Bridge Road was robbed earlier this month. Four employees at the store reported the theft to Roswell Police on June 4. The suspects stole $10,000 from the establishment's safe, and while doing so, turned off the power to the store. As a result, more than $150,000 of refrigerated medication and merchandise were also ruined. The loss of power also shut down the store's surveillance system, therefore police could not recover any video footage of the crime. However, through their investigation, Roswell police determined that suspects didn't use force to enter the store or to access the safe. They found that a key was used to enter the front door and that a passcode was used to access the safe. Employees told police that there is no security guard on the premises when the store is closed, and that the security codes are shared amongst corporate loss prevention staff and multiple employees. The theft is currently under investigation by the Roswell Police Department; CVS is conducting their own internal investigation as well. (Appen Media)
- A forest fire has ignited at the Vickery Creek recreation area in Roswell. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is using helicopters to combat the flames. On Wednesday visitors to the area were advised to stay away of the trail that is closest to the bend in Big Creek; rangers kept the rest of the recreation area open. Residents that live near Kings Mill Court and Sloan Street were told that they would see smoke, but not fire from the natural event. The fire is retained to the eastern side of Big Creek. Only a third of an acre has burned. and firefighters are working to keep the flames from spreading. Officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire and no injuries have been reported. - The fatal crash that occurred on GA-4oo North on Tuesday morning was caused by a driver who was going to wrong way on the highway. The 21-year-old driver, Dahmir Rivera, entered the highway in the wrong direction and was going southbound in the northbound lanes. He soon crashed head-on with a gray Nissan Sentra that was carrying two passengers. Both individuals in the Nissan passed away. Rivera was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He was charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving and wrong way driving charges. He was taken and booked into the Fulton County Jail. (11 Alive)
