Here are the top stories in Roswell today:
- Fulton County Schools has a new plan that focuses on “protecting the investment” by not building any new schools in the county within the next five years. This investment plan will address renovations, replacements and “behind-the-scenes” work at existing schools in the district. Declining enrollment has been cited as the reason that the county is putting a pause on adding new educational facilities. Several schools in North Fulton are on the list to receive repairs and renovations. Some schools in Roswell will receive replacements to their roofs and freezer system and Centennial High School and Roswell High School are scheduled to have their practice fields replaced in 2025. Officials from the county say that this new focus will allow them to be “good stewards” of taxpayer's dollars. (Appen Media)
- Two sisters in Roswell are making history in the sport of volleyball. It is said that Mikayla and Madison Middleton are two of the most "dominant volleyball players in the state of Georgia." They are both middle blockers who play at Roswell's A5 Volleyball Club. Madison won the national championship as well as the USA Volleyball’s Southern Region’s first national championship in June. A few weeks later, the other sister Mikayla's team, also won the national championship. Out of 1,512 teams in the region, these two teams were of the five who has won a national championship. The Middletons' are now the only sisters in the state to both win a title in the same year. (Peachtree TV)
- On June 14, a 21-year-old Roswell man was arrested in Alpharetta and was charged with false imprisonment after he was reported to have physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend. The fire department was called to the scene initially, but they soon requested assistance from the police department after a woman was heard screaming from inside an apartment on Ivywood Lane. Officers say they saw a woman lying down and knocking on a window when they arrived on the scene. They noticed that her face was “fully covered in blood” when she eventually sat up. The alleged assailant opened the door for police when they attempted to enter the unit to access the situation. The woman told officers that her ex-boyfriend caused her injuries when she came to collect her belongings from his home. She also told police, “Don’t let him hurt me.” The man denied the allegations against him; however, he was arrested at the scene at is now facing charges of felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery.
