Here are the top stories in Roswell today:

  1. Four tennis courts at East Roswell Park will be reconstructed after a $217,080 contract with Signature Tennis Courts was approved by the City Council. New fencing and windscreens around the eight existing courts in the park were also included in the contract. The four courts being rebuilt were developed over 20 years ago; they have never been rebuilt. However, the courts have undergone scheduled maintenance that has increased their lifespan. These courts will also be redesigned to be used as pickleball courts as well. (Paywall: ajc.com)
  2. A fire broke out in a Roswell apartment complex on Saturday, May 6. The fire displaced 13 residents at the Atlantic Newtown Apartment Homes on Nesbit Ferry Road. Firefighters and public safety personnel responded and arrived on the scene within 7 minutes of the call and quickly got to work looking for occupants while battling the flames. The response teams were able to swiftly contain the blaze to a single unit's attic space; this stopped the fire from causing more damage and harm. Roswell's Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. The affected families are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. (thegeorgiasun.com)
  3. An extortion attempt was reported to the Roswell Police Department on April 14. A Roswell man told police that an individual that he connected with on Facebook created an alias to send him photos of himself that had been edited to show the man in "compromising positions with children." The accused extortionist then demanded $3,000 from the victim and threatened to post the photos in multiple places if the fee was not paid. The victim refused. While police were interviewing the victim, the blackmailer called to request more money. The Roswell Police Department is investigating and advised the victim to stop all contact with the blackmailer and not to send any money. (appenmedia.com)
