- A $2.1 billion budget has just been approved for the 2023-2024 school year by the Fulton County School Board at a June 6 meeting. This budget is a 31 percent increase from the current year's budget to include a 7.1 percent pay raise for all employees. Also, in order to increase the employee retention level, a one-time 2 percent pay increase was also approved. The county's grading policy was reviewed at the meeting as well. The board discussed the results from a recent survey conducted by teachers, administrators, and parents regarding the district's new grading policy that went into effect in the fall of 2022. - Tracy Chmelecki is the founder of the Roswell-based nonprofit, Children Without Beds. She works to give every child a warm, comfortable, and protected place to sleep. The organization gifts new beds, frames, mattresses, bedbug and waterproof mattress covers, comforters, sheet sets, and pillows to children who don't have a bed to sleep in. Since its beginning in 2017, Children Without Beds has provided over 600 beds to kids in need. Chmelecki said, "We just don't want to deliver a bed; we want to show love." However, they are currently in need of a box truck to deliver beds, and a warehouse to store supplies. More importantly, the nonprofit is looking for volunteers to help advance their cause. - An assault was reported in the Roswell Creek neighborhood on May 20. A woman told police that she was attacked while taking her garbage out by an unknown individual. The report states that the woman was outside when a man came up behind her and ordered her to tell him who lives in her home. After she told him she lives with her husband, the man used his fist to struck her on the mouth and on the head. Police observed a cut on the woman's lip, however, she declined medical treatment. The couple were advised to call police again if the man returns. (Appen Media)
- Almost $10 million in grants have been awarded to the City of Roswell over the last year and a half. The funds came from the federal and state government sources. These grant funds have and will be used for various projects throughout the city. Improvements to public safety, trails, parks, city streets, and sidewalks will be made by using some of these funds. “The amount of grants received by the City in the last 16 months is unprecedented in Roswell’s history,” said Mayor Kurt Wilson. The City of Roswell said these awarded funds display how taxes paid to federal and state governments can be reinvested to local communities. (City of Roswell, Georgia)
