Here are the top stories today in Roswell:
- A sinkhole opened up and shut down some areas in downtown Roswell on Wednesday afternoon. The sinkhole developed on Webb Street, and cause southbound traffic to cease along Canton Street near Highway 9 and Norcross Street. Crews worked all afternoon and were able to reopen Canton Street, however, Webb Street remains closed. This unfortunate event has added another issue for city leaders to work out as they move forward with their plan to close Canton Street to vehicles this summer. A final decision on the Canton Street endeavor will be made in the next upcoming weeks. (11alive.com)
- Alpharetta police arrested a 22-year-old resident of Roswell after he was caught racing his car on April 29. Alpharetta police officers were monitoring traffic along Old Milton Parkway and Haynes Bridge Road; they observed two vehicles speed off from a red light going over 70 miles per hour. Officers encountered the Roswell man's the vehicles after it stopped at another red light. He admitted to racing the other car and was arrested. He was charged with racing, reckless driving, and speeding. He was transported to the North Fulton County Jail. (appenmedia.com)
- A very special U.S. military veteran was proclaimed a Esteemed Veteran of Roswell on Monday's Mayor and Council meeting. Kenneth Kraus was a Marine Corps staff Sergeant E-6 and was the first American hostage taken by Iran in 1979. At the meeting, Kraus recalled his time in Iran's Evin Prison as "a medieval torture castle left there from the Crusades. It’s a hideous place, and for eight days there I was beaten, tortured.” Staff Sergeant Kraus went on to become a member of the Roswell Police Department where he served for 21 years. Mayor Kurt Wilson and the Roswell City Council joined a standing room ovation to honor Kraus for his national, international, and local service and sacrifice. (msn.com)
