Here are the top stories in Roswell today:
- Fulton County Schools has met its goal and has named a new principal for River Eves Elementary School. The county had to find a new leader for the school after former principal, Matthew Donahoe, resigned due to personal reasons on April 13. The school's current assistant principal, Susan Gowin, has been promoted to the role of head principal. Gowin has been with the school since 2011 and was hired as a teacher. Since then, she has performed multiple roles, and eventually became the elementary school's assistant principal in 2020. Her promotion was officially announced by Fulton County Schools on May 16. - The City of Roswell's AAA bond rating lets financial markets know that Roswell is safe to issue debt to and is not likely to default on that debt. Due to this bond rating, the City of Roswell can issue $86.2 million in bond debt with the some of the most preferable interest rates the market. “This is great news for the city,” Mayor Kurt Wilson said. “It shows that decisions made by this mayor and Council have been fiscally sound and will allow us to get the best interest rates on the bonds that we have issued.” Out of the $86.2 million in bonds that issued, $53.1 million of bonds will be used for the Recreation and Parks Department, bicycle paths, pedestrian paths and sidewalks. $13.1 million will be used towards Public Safety initiatives. $20 million will be allocated for a public parking deck in downtown Roswell. - Canton Street business owners plan to create their own task force to create a plan for the Canton Street District. Therefore, along with the council's group, there will be two separate task forces to study and develop a proposal. One resident, Susan Tyser, said the "creation of the task force is 'very important,' so long as it includes residents a mile or two out from Canton Street in every direction because of traffic and safety concerns." The businesses say it should take them about three weeks to make a plan. (Appen Media)
