- Graduation Week has begun for students in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. - A 1,200-pound great white shark has been swimming off the coast of Savannah and Hilton Head over the past week. The shark, named Ironbound by researchers, was previously tagged by OCEARCH near Nova Scotia in 2019. Ironbound is around 12' long. Since he was tagged, he has traveled more than 15,000 miles from Nova Scotia to as far south as the Florida Keys. (WJCL)
- A recent report from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William & Mary ranked Savannah third out of 32 coastal cities for rising sea levels. The report indicates that Savannah will see a 1.5' increase in sea levels by 2050, a rate of increase that is higher than many other coastal cities. Rising sea levels impact ocean shores, but also residential areas through stormwater drainage, where rising tides can cause stormwater to back up in streets and flood. To mitigate these issues, some coastal cities are applying infrastructure solutions, such as houses on stilts or rain-absorbing gardens. (Savannah Morning News)
