Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:

  1. The Medical College of Georgia is looking to expand its Savannah program into a fully-fledged, four-year campus for medical students. The four-year program is set to open by the fall of 2024 and would be Savannah's second four-year medical school. Medical College of Georgia Dean Dr. David Hess explained that Savannah and South Georgia are experiencing a physician shortage, and doctors often stay in the area where they were trained to practice medicine. Additionally, he said the MCG campus in Augusta only enrolls 204 students and is essentially out of space. (GPB.com)
  2. Cleanup efforts are set to begin soon at the Tomochichi Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse after a partial collapse of the third floor occurred in April. The U.S. General Services Administration reported that the collapse was due to insufficient support under the third floor and not due to larger, structural issues. Eight-foot barriers will soon be constructed at the site, and repair work is set to begin the first week of June and last throughout the month. A GSA spokesperson said there will be temporary road closures to allow for the use of a crane for necessary repairs. (WJCL)
  3. Ahead of Memorial Day, the Chatham Marine Patrol is sharing some reminders for boats and watercraft. Boaters are encouraged to not operate their vessels while under the influence since that is a leading cause of serious incidents. Marine Patrol Cpl. Heath Wynn stressed the importance of having safety equipment, such as life jackets, a fire extinguisher, and a visual distress device. He also suggested having a tow membership since first responders only save people and don't recover disabled boats. (WTOC)
