📰 News we're reading

• SCCPSS reports five guns brought on campus in last academic year (savannahnow.com) — Savannah-Chatham County schools recorded at least five handgun incidents on campuses during the 2024-25 year, including a recent accidental shooting in Hubert Middle School’s locker room. District officials describe existing security measures and new technology investments, while emphasizing case-by-case discipline decisions and coordination with law enforcement to keep Savannah students safe.

• Savannah police arrest second person in deadly shooting (wjcl.com) — Savannah Police have arrested a second suspect in a fatal shooting on West Gwinnett Street, charging both men with murder, aggravated assault, and firearm offenses. The victim was found outside a residence on Dec. 28 and died at the scene despite officers’ life-saving efforts, and investigators say the case remains active.

• Regional landfill denied amid looming trash problem as growth moves west (savannahnow.com) — Trash from multiple counties is increasingly being routed to Savannah’s Superior Landfill and the city’s Dean Forest Road Landfill after Candler County rejected a major expansion proposal. With one Savannah-area landfill nearing capacity and others restricted, regional waste pressures could raise disposal costs and affect long-term trash options for Chatham County residents.
