City of Savannah, Chatham County, SEDA, and CHSA Launch Housing United to Strengthen Countywide Affordable Housing Development (savannahtribune.com) — Local leaders have launched Housing United, a new CHSA-based partnership to expand affordable and workforce housing in Savannah and across Chatham County, building on the Housing Savannah Action Plan. Backed by the city, county, SEDA, and Georgia Ports Authority investments, the initiative will coordinate funding, prioritize projects, and support new and existing developments to help renters, homeowners, and homebuyers keep pace with rapid regional growth.
   

2. Savannah's Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum Kicks Off 30th Anniversary Celebration On January 1st (savannahtribune.com) — Savannah residents are invited to the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum on New Year’s Day as it launches a year-long celebration of its 30th anniversary at 460 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The kickoff runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with performances honoring civil rights leader Westley Wallace Law, and the museum will host monthly programs and a major celebration through 2026.
   

3. Man in Savannah tree standoff identified and taken into custody (savannahnow.com) — Savannah police have identified 34-year-old Wakeel Clay as the man who spent about seven hours in a tree near East Bolton Street before climbing down and being taken into custody. Savannah Fire deployed a ladder truck while officers and neighbors watched anxiously, and Clay now faces criminal trespass and obstruction charges stemming from the tense daytime standoff.
   

4. Georgia football hopes to avoid playoff bye curse in Sugar Bowl (wtoc.com) — Savannah viewers are getting a front-row look as Georgia heads into the Sugar Bowl against Ole Miss, trying to shake off last year’s playoff bye jinx. With Kirby Smart tweaking how the Bulldogs handle a long layoff, local fans will be watching closely to see if the new approach pays off in Thursday’s quarterfinal.
   

5. Weeping Time land: Group works to buy, build memorial (gpb.org) — Community leaders and historians are working to buy the former Ten Broeck Race Course site on West Old Lathrop Avenue in Savannah to build a major memorial to The Weeping Time slave auction. The effort faces a steep $35 million price tag, private ownership hurdles, and debate over tools like eminent domain, even as descendants and local officials push to honor Savannah’s central role in Black history.
