18 Displaced In 3rd Fire At Smyrna Apartment Complex Since June

Four units were in flames at the Cortland at the Village apartments in Smyrna over the weekend, displacing 18 people total.

SMYRNA, GA — The Cortland at the Village apartments in Smyrna saw its third fire since June over the weekend, leaving 18 residents displaced.

Firefighters were dispatched to the complex around 12:30 p.m. Sunday and found four units in flames, Smyrna fire department spokesperson Eric Mohrmann told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It took about three hours to get the fire under control.

The four units were left with "significant fire damage" and 12 others had smoke and water damage, the AJC reported. No one was injured.

The American Red Cross in Georgia helped the 18 people who lived in the 16 damaged units.

“Along with emotional support, volunteers provided emergency resources to help those affected with temporary lodging, food, clothing and personal care items,” Red Cross spokesman Jay Lawrence told the AJC. “Caseworkers will continue to work with those affected in the weeks ahead to help them get back on their feet.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In 2020, firefighters responded to two fires at the same apartment complex within three weeks of each other — one on June 19 and one on June 30, according to the AJC. Investigations showed the other two fires were accidental and weather-related, respectively, Mohrmann said.
