Board Votes To Close Charter School In Smyrna

School district administrators vote Thursday to shutter the International Academy of Smyrna due to poor academics, newspaper reports.

SMYRNA, GA -- The International Academy of Smyrna will close its doors after this school year, displacing more than 1,000 students in Cobb County, Patch has learned.

School board officials voted 6-1 to close the school after continuous sub-par academic results, according to news reports. Also, the school continued to score below average in its district and at the state level, leading education officials to recommend not renewing the charter, which will expire soon.

Students now have the option this fall to enroll in any school that has the room. Despite multiple pleas from parents, the board decided that shuttering the school on South Cobb Drive was best for the district and the students.

“The growth was not there," Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said before Thursday's meeting, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "The academic success was not there.”
