Cobb Child Molester Sentenced to Prison

The man's reputation as a man of God saw him left alone with a 7-year-old girl while the girl's grandmother went to work.

A Cobb County man will be spending a long time in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of child molestation, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Jerry Wayne Spencer, 48 had established his own church and between 2012 and 2013 was left alone with his girlfriend’s 7-year-old granddaughter due to his supposed piety. However, Spencer took advantage of his girlfriend’s trust and molested the girl while his girlfriend worked nights. Spencer told his victim he would take the child away from her grandmother if she ever said anything about the abuse, the DA’s Office said.

“This defendant preyed upon his 7-year-old victim in her own home and when the child was left in his care,” said ADA Susan Treadaway, who prosecuted the case, in a statement. “Charged with the responsibility of protecting her, the defendant instead violated this little girl physically and tortured her emotionally, placing her in fear should she report the abuse to an adult. It was only after the defendant moved out of the home that the victim found the courage to come forward.”
